QuickTime player alternative to play Windows Media files on Mac But it should work just fine now Though VLC has been a remarkably versatile. It is a bit surprising, that the developers took this long, to add suppoert for the latest version of the operating system, which was launched over four months ago. The most important addition to the application, is support for Mac OS El Capitan. VLC media player 2.2.2 has been released, with a ton of new features. It is really annoying if you come across a WMV file and can't view it on your Mac. The reason behind this it the fact that WMV files use Microsoft proprietary codecs that don't work in OS X El Capitan. For Mac OS X El Capitan users, when you try to play Windows Media files (wmv) with Mac's default media player app - QuickTime, you will commonly receive an error message along the lines of 'This is not a movie file'.
